The National X-ray Micro- and Nanotomography Infrastructure (FinTomo-RI) provides X-ray tomography services for academic research and companies.
The infrastructure is hosted by six Finnish universities (Oulu, Helsinki, Jyväskylä, Tampere, Lappeenranta, Eastern Finland), and each of the hosts provides services for solving specific scientific challenges. The topics of the work done with the infrastructure can be related to, e.g., the development of
environmentally friendly materials, the curing of serious diseases, or the understanding of different forms of carbon in the environment. Check out the list of publications produced with the infrastructure to get an overview of what we do!
Our vision is to be a leading developer of X-ray tomography techniques and a provider of a wide range of cutting-edge X-ray tomography capabilities to support excellent science, impactful interaction with society, and high-quality education.
We keep up a versatile palette of X-ray tomography devices. Many of our devices work in the 1 µm – 10 µm resolution regime, but we also have capabilities to go up to 60 nm resolution for maximum detail detectability and down to 300 µm resolution for maximum sample size. We can perform longitudinal experiments lasting several months that would be impossible even in many synchrotron laboratories due to limited beamtime. Our in-situ capabilities include control of compression and tension, temperature, relative humidity, and various flow configurations.
Imaging is only the first part of the journey towards new information. To support our users, we provide also image analysis services combined to imaging or standalone. This allows our users to extract quantitative information from the volume image data, i.e., convert images to numbers describing the samples and their differences.
We serve users from the academia, research institutes, and companies; we educate experts on imaging and material analysis; we work with several synchrotron laboratories like ESRF and PSI; we develop imaging and image analysis software and devices.
All of our expertise is available for both academic and commercial projects.
Are you a member of public or just interested in science? Would you like to visit our labs and see what we do? Contact us and we will arrange a visit for your group, or come to see us in the next European Researchers ‘ Night. It’s an open doors event with activities designed for the general public!
